Mice Asia Net : July 2008
macau best yet story By Brad Foster IMAGEs By macau government tourism oFFice B usiness just keeps getting better for Macau. The destination, one hour by ferry from Hong Kong (and 16 minutes by helicopter if you have the budget), is fast making a name for itself on an international scale with each passing month as new venues come on line with unwavering regularity. As if to prove that the destination has got what it takes to compete globally, it must have come as no surprise when Macau successfully bid for and won the right to host the Pacific Asia Travel Association Board of Directors and AGM in 2009 (April). But perhaps even more progressive in terms of future strategy was a decision earlier this year by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) to team up with Hong Kong in joint promotional activities. Director of the MGTO, João Manuel Costa Antunes, believes that with their own distinctive features Macau and Hong Kong can achieve a win-win with a joint promotional strategy in some instances. In the MICE market, Macau continues to experience unprecedented growth. As was the case in 2007, MICE business is expected to again rise by as much as 30 per cent when 2008 comes to a close. Recognising the upward trend in late 2007 the MGTO launched a series of seminars for professionals wishing to broaden their knowledge of the meetings, incentives and events industry. Presenting the seminars were MGTO business tourism consultants, Gary Grimmer and Mike Williams, both formerly of the Melbourne Convention & Visitors Bureau. Seminars were divided into two main topics: “Meetings Business: Getting Your Share” and “Building Your Business: Developing the Convention and Incentive Market for Macau”. To comE Macau is already sitting pretty in the convention and incentive travel market, and will only grow in stature in the coming years.
