Mice Asia Net : January 2009
case study sydney showcase event NAME: Mining and Construction Asia Pacific Meeting TYPE: Four-day conference and social program NO. ON ORGANISING TEAM: Five plus many more during the program PAX: 180 delegates and their partners from China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Australia, New Zealand S WHAT YOU DID: We designed a four-day program - a showcase of Sydney for the Asia Pacific audience. This comprised conference set design and production, a social program including day and evening events and a partners’ program. Special events included a ‘Taste of Australia’ Sydney Harbour cruise featuring Australian cuisine and wine tasting, a welcome soiree at Sydney Opera House complete with fireworks display over the harbour, a tribute to Australia – a Great Southern Land evening at the Overseas Passenger Terminal complete with Icehouse performance, a Melbourne Cup luncheon at Doltone House complete with exclusive TAB facilities, a night of Theatrical Elegance at Sydney University Great Hall featuring the Australian Girls Choir, Four Hands piano performance, The Sydney Symphony Orchestra and a wandering magician. Plus we had a three-day partners’ program including an array of Sydney experiences highlighting the history, culture and sophistication of Sydney including exclusive breakfast and tour of the Monet exhibition at the Art Gallery NSW, Rocks walking tour, an opportunity to learn the history of Australian opals and pearls and a Royal Botanical Gardens tour. Overall guests experienced the diversity of what Sydney has to offer! SPECIAL TOUCHES: There were so many… each event had special touches. ‘Aussie Ambassadors’ provided guests with personal commentary of the many Sydney sights on the Harbour Cruise – avoiding the awful microphone commentary! We had pre-recorded vision from Flemington on Melbourne Cup day with personalised messages from many Australian celebrities including Jennifer Hawkins. On the farewell evening after guests went inside the Great Hall at Sydney University, the quadrangle lawn was transformed into a sea of candlelight with more than 500 candles and metres of fairy lights creating an ethereal wonderland. CHALLENGES: Our only real challenge during the program was the Sydney weather… it provided guests with wardrobe challenges during this week – the diversity of beautiful warm spring weather to a blistering 12 degree evening! This event utilised a wide selection of some of Sydney’s best event spaces including Sydney University Great Hall, The Sydney Opera House and the Overseas Passenger Terminal. 60 miceAsia.net For further information contact Off-Site Connections by visiting www.offsiteconnections.com.
